Artist Reception Scheduled for Tuesday Evening at Hire Grounds

Public is invited to "Observations" show by Ron Vaz

(AUGUSTA, GA) - Augusta area art lovers are invited to meet visual artist Ron Vaz and enjoy light refreshments at Tuesday’s artist reception from 6-8 p.m. at Hire Grounds Cafe, the coffee shop and bookstore located at the corner of Washington and Furys Ferry Roads. Hire Grounds is featuring Vaz’s art through the end of the month.

Vaz graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in photography in 1996. Among his many interests in photography production, is alternative materials and techniques utilizing less mainstream methods of image-making. This collection of re-photographed SX70 Polaroid prints contains examples of both straight documentary images and hand-manipulated abstracted prints photographed over the last 20 years.

Vaz said Polaroid instant film was chosen for the unpredictable nature of reproduction in both sharpness and color accuracy to further the concept of serendipitous abstraction. The reproduction prints are deliberately diminutive to invite the viewer in for closer, personal exploration and discovery.

Hire Grounds Café specializes in gourmet coffees, smoothies, sandwiches, salads, gelato and fresh-made desserts. All proceeds from the café support Goodwill’s job training and placement services. The venue features a new artist each month, with a portion from the sale  of their artwork also supporting Goodwill’s efforts to change lives by building career pathways out of poverty.

“This is a visually stunning show,” said Ashley Brown, senior manager of community outreach at Goodwill. “The way the original photos are used to make something new and different is impressive, and Ron’s work really draws people in.”

In addition to Tuesday’s reception, Vaz’s art can be seen during Hire Grounds regular business hours Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
